Mandatory from July 2024: TPMS for a safer and more efficient transport sector
From 6 July 2024, all new trailers in the EU must be equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) or a tyre pressure system with automatic refilling (TPRS) with an in-cab warning. This legislation, UN ECE R-141, increases road safety for all road users and saves fuel costs for the user.
TPMS, short for Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, measures tyre pressure and issues a warning when the pressure deviates. The system ensures that the condition of the tyres remains optimal and prevents blowouts, which are a major cause of road accidents. In addition, correct tyre pressure ensures safer handling and shorter braking distances. You also save on fuel costs and CO² emissions. In addition, the vehicle has less downtime and will be used more cost-efficiently.
STAS has chosen a TPMS system compatible with 3 different brands of sensors to ensure customers have flexibility in choosing sensors when they need to be replaced:
- Wabco 'grey' strap mount sensor
- Goodyear 'yellow' strap mount sensor
- TireCheck 'red' strap mount sensor
When there’s pressure loss in the tyres, the driver is notified by the 'flat tyre' icon on the dashboard. Depending on the model of the truck, the infotainment screen can also display the actual pressure and temperature of each tyre. The driver can read the correct values on the smartboard on the trailer. Alternatively, the Wabco Fleet Installer can be consulted with the device number to view the pressure and temperature for each tyre.
In addition, service points may also have a TPMS reader that allows them to measure each tyre and pinpoint the problem easily.
Tyre change or spare wheel: what now?
Need to change a tyre or put on a spare wheel? Then first check whether it’s fitted with a sensor. If not, you will continue to receive the low tyre pressure message until it is fitted with a new sensor. If the new tyre does have a sensor, you will have to indicate this to the TPMS system, so it connects the data to said tyre.
